The selfpublishing way

Posted on Updated on

I’m in Italy and when I started writing I didn’t know that you can publish a book without to pay to the Publishing House. I never published before 2009 and I never payed anyone to publish a book of mine. I write from more than 20 years.

From the 2009 I started to look for a Publisher, but I understood that you have to afford too much compromises to be published. You have to know the Publisher personally, he/she has to be a your great friend, maybe your best friend, just so you can have a chance, or you have to pay 2000-3000 euros to a Big Literature Agency to be accepted from a Publisher.

Two years ago I heard for the first time the word “Selfpublishing”.

In two years I learnt to make good e-book, very clean, well formatted and validated according to the standard and later I learnt that the Big Publisher are not able at all to create a good e-book, I repeat: they’re not able to do it. There are a lot of people around the world that do not manage a Publishing House, but do better than them.

There are a lot of people that write very well, but no Publishing House wants their story. In Italy a new Publishing House come into the world every month. And all with the same purpose. To discover talent writers that the other can’t or won’t. But the procedure is always the same. Long time to reply, people write on the Publishing House website that they will reply to everyone because who doesn’t reply is a ill-mannered person, but at the end of the story no one replies to the writer that they don’t want to publish. And each Publishing House has its own policies to receive your text. And they’re all different, so you waste time, but they don’t want to waste their time.

I heard about selfpublishers, I purchased an e-reader, I purchased some selfpublished e-books and they were fine.

I reflected and I understood. I don’t want tu publish with a Publishing House, I’m not ready to give away my story to a perfect stranger and don’t be free to use my stories and my characters where and when I want just for pennies. And then I have to sell my book in place of the Publishing House, yes, because some of them just select your text and print it with their Publishing House Logo, nothing else. You have to provide all the hard work, so I simply do this hard work all of my own blaming just myself.

I don’t have the real necessity to publish, but If I want to publish my story I will do on my own after to have reviewed the text a million of times, after to edited my book with a professional editor, after I choose the right title of the book, the cover, the price. It’s funny, but, of course, it’s not simple.

So, now I’m a selfpublisher and I’m always more convinced I did the right thing. I don’t want a Publishing House behind my shoulder because I want the full control on my book.

And you? Are you a selfpublisher? Have you ever heard about them? Have you ever read a selfpublished story?

Let me know.

See you soon.
